What are Yemenite Shofars?

Yemenite shofars are used during the celebration of Rosh Hashanah. This particular variety of shofars brought down to Israel from Africa. In comparison to other varieties of European shofars the Yemenite shofar is much bigger in size and is also spiral in nature. The cartilage is the only thing that needs to be extracted for making a shofar. Horns of the kudu antelope is not available in Israel so it has to be imported from Southern or Eastern Africa.

The removal of the cartilage from the shofars is quite a tough job. The shofars need to be boiled in water for about two to five hours so that the cartilage comes out of the shofar quiet easily. Appropriate amount of washing soda and borax are also used for removing the cartilage from the shofars. The size of Yemenite shofar is very long so using of washing soda would be much more effective for the removal of cartilage.

Measurements are done in an appropriate manner to cut the Yemenite shofar in a perpendicular manner from the tip of it. Now 3/16", 6" long bit is placed in the centre of the flat surface of the Yemenite shofar by boring a hollow into it. The mouthpiece is now made at the Yemenite shofar using the electric model tool.

How to buy the best Yemenite shofar?

A lot of research should be done before settling down on the Yemenite shofar to be bought. Otherwise you might be misleaded to buy the wrong Yemenite shofar. The size of the Yemenite shofar should not be the only determinant factor for buying it.

You need to check on the number of inch that is determining the size of Yemenite shofar. Buy shofar in various different sizes. The smallest Yemenite shofar measures between 26 and 29 inches, the medium one measure 30 to 33 inches and the largest shofar of this particular variety measure between 34 and 38 inches.
