How do I hook up my Garmin eTrex Venture to my PC?
My grandpa gave me this GPS since he doesn't use it anymore. It came with a cable that allows me to somehow hook it up to my computer and download coordinates for Geocaching, which is one of the main things I want to use it for. However, When I looked at the tower, front and back, I saw no ports that would fit the cable except for one, which the monitor is currently plugged in to. I'm wondering if I have to take the monitor plug out, or if my PC just doesn't have the thing I'm looking for. Thanks for the help!!!
he gave you one of the older models that uses a serial port. If you look closely, the connector on the cable has two rows of pins (4 pins, 5 pins) and the monitor connector as three rows (4 pins, 5 pins, 6 pins).
The most reliable way is to buy a serial port card for your tower.
You can also try "usb to serial" converters. It is easier since you don't have to open your computer but not all of them may work with all serial equipment.
If he gave you a disk with maps or other software, it will install the drivers for the serial port and let you upload/download information.
If not, you can buy the software from Garmin (it is very good) or use free software like USA Photomap (http://jdmcox.com/) it is free and will allow you to see your trips on arial photos or topo maps.
