Garmin 'Locate' Feature - Can it be used for backpacking?

I am going to purchase a GPS and have done my homework. I am leaning towards the Garmin Nuvi 755T but hope someone can answer this question. I am getting it for my wife and I know that they make units that are designed for outdoor use but...

If I use the 'Locate' feature (the feature that tracks the position of your vehicle once it is removed from the mount), can I carry the gps with me in my backpack, walk and camp for miles in the forest, and then it will get me back to the car? In other words, will it track my position off road and get me back to the car if there are no roads for it to use? What if I turn it off? Will it save the position so that I can turn it back on and get back to the car?
