LG DR275 DVD Recorder Faulty From Day 1?

I got this recorder as a gift a year ago & set it up only recently. When the recorder is turned on, only the 'Home' and 'Setup' buttons on the remote control work. I've changed the batteries but not luck. Called the service centre & was told that since the warranty period is over, there will be $40 charge (before GST and spare parts charges) for home repair service. Since dvd recorders are so cheap nowadays, think it's more worth it to throw it away. But I felt guilty doing that as it is basically a new machine & has never been used before. I can't help wondering why a new machine can be spoilt so easily and if all LG products are that unreliable.? Any suggestion as to what I can do with the faulty machine?

If I were you, I'd buy a new one. Maybe you could sell the broken one, telling the buyer what's wrong with it. Maybe someone will give you $20 for it. It'd probably cost $60 to get it fixed and then the same problem might crop up in another couple months. You can get a new one for $100.
