There are lots of Durable Dog Toys out there, but the trick is in knowing which ones really are. Really durable toys can be hard to find. I realize this every time I walk down the hall and find that one of our lovable canine critters has demolished another toy. This is especially noticeable if it was a stuffed toy. It is even more noticeable if the toy belonged to somebody other than the dogs, say...oh - my granddaughter. Hmmm.

We currently have two testers in our household. We have a large sweetheart of a lab/german shepherd mix and a tenacious, sometimes sneaky Chihuahua. They are wonderful pets and willing participants in our experiments. They are perfectly capable of examining the durability of any and all dog toys on the market.

Ball for Dogs

The toy of all dog toys is still the ball - basic, standard balls for dogs. Tennis balls, rubber balls, rawhide balls, balls on strings, any kind of ball you can think of will be popular with just about any mutt. When you throw it, the ball bounces. This puts a bit of excitement into the game. Uncertainty heightens the expectation.

Bouncing balls are virtually always fetched with joy. Whether they are actually returned to the thrower is another matter. Training is involved. That's another article. What we speak of here are those marvelous round toys that have a chance of holding up past the first spirited game of catch. Check out all kinds, not just the round ones. Footballs, swimming pool balls, balls catapulted with mechanical devices - all are fair game and our dogs slobber happily on all kinds.

Kong

The Kong Dog Biscuit Ball is a twist on the standard Kong toy. We like this toy because it is much easier to stuff. You just cram dog biscuits into the openings. It is not all that hard for the dogs to get the biscuits out, but it takes a little time. There is the added benefit of increasing the chew time on the biscuits - they have to chew instead of just swallowing them whole. The ball itself is sturdy and holds up well. The Kong Dog Biscuit Ball is one durable dog toy.

Rope Toys

The most interesting of the rope toys that we've investigated is a combo ball/rope toy. Of course, it is brightly colored to make it easy for the owners to find in tall grass. The "arms" that extend from the ball make it fly irregularly when thrown. It has enough weight to carry well without going too far. And it's easy for our big dog to grab in the air and the little one to drag around by a rope. This one's a hit.

Dental Bones

There are tons of different dental bones. They last for ages, though their appearance certainly deteriorates significantly before they disappear completely. These are toys that, according to one of the merchant websites, "promote good canine dental hygiene, enhance overall mental fitness, and encourage positive behavior." We pretty much agree with that. Our dogs love the flavor of these bones. Just make sure you have enough for everybody - theft is an ugly outgrowth of good taste.

You

More important than the toys you choose for your dogs is the relationship that you develop, often through play. As you roughhouse, toss the ball, play tug of war, and hug your dogs, you build a trust that makes him eager to please and confident of your affection. When it comes to durable dog toys, you are the best of them all.

What would you recommend for durable luggage? Hard shell?

My husband travels weekly for work and the airlines are massively distructive with luggage as I am sure everyone knows. He is debating buying high end stuff ($300+) or buying more mid grade which needs replacement often. Does anyone have any experience with a very durable brand? What about hard shell?

I travel for a living. Travel Pro, E-bags, Samsonite, American tourister, All good. Travel pro is best. I bought middle grade bagsfor a while, but replacing them got way too expensive. Go ahead and spend a little extra money now -- you'll save in the longrun. Hard Shell tend to weigh a ton while empty, just get a really good 21"-22" bag. This will fit in most aircraft's overhead bins. This way, your husband will not have to check his bag. No Matter where I am going, no matter for how long, I pack the same small bag and bring it on board with me. This will also cut back on the damage the bag gets when being handled by the airline.
