Automotive Air Bag Testing Instruments

Good smoothness and open easiness of automotive air bag are vital to backup air bags and quick reaction when the passenger is in danger. The material of air bag is rubber coated nylon. A 2kg bag is held by a string to the ceiling. A 10g bullet travelling at 100 m/s strikes the stationary bag. The speed of the bag after the collision is 0.80 m/s. Assuming there is no friction, determine the maximum height, in centimetres, of the bag after the collision.

After the bag is hit, it will tend to swing on the string. Mechanical energy must be conserved since you are told there is no loss due to friction. Therefore at all times after the impact, the kinetic and potential energies must sum to the same thing, the total mechanical energy.

This implies that the maximum height the bag reaches is the height at which the bag's potential energy is equal to its kinetic energy immediately after impact. If K is kinetic energy, P is potential energy, m is mass, v is the speed of the bag directly after impact, g the acceleration due to gravity and h the height

K = 1/2 mv²
P = mgh

Since we know the maximum height is when the potential energy equals the original kinetic energy,

1/2 mv² = mgh, and note the m's cancel:

1/2 v² = gh. Dividing both sides by g results in

h = v²/2g, and noting that g = 9.8 m/s² the acceleration due to gravity and v = 0.80 m/s. we have

h = 0.80²/(2*9.8) = 3.3 cm.
