Are there any GPS receivers that would be good for both auto navigation as well as geocaching?

I've never owned a GPS. I tried geocaching, and thought it was fun, so we're looking at buying a GPS device. What confuses me, though, is that some devices look like they are specialized for hiking/geocaching (like the Garmin eTrex), and others look more specialized for automobile navigation (like the Garmin nuvi). Is that true? Or are there some good ones that can do both comfortably? I don't want to spend more than $150.

I use an Etrex Vista HCx in my car, along with using it for mapping trails.
When I am in my car, There is a place that I can wedge it in place by my steering wheel and I can read it (it only beeps to warn and at corners instead of announcing the turn). In my girlfriends truck, I set it beside the seat and pick it up occasionally to glance at it.

Any unit with map can be used in the car.
I used my previous etrex that did not do routing on longer trips but had to mark waypoints in it in advance, had to be willing to live with straight lines between the points and it would not change the route if I decided to go off route.
It still worked well as a "self locating map" when I was in a city I didn't know. It would tell me how far and the direction for the target location but I was on my own to find a route over to it.

Under $150 is cutting it close.

The trade offs you have are:

Maps. Most car users expect routable maps. The cheaper outdoors (many other uses other than geochahing) may not allow routing or may not take as large of a map. In the etrex line, the models with an x after their name use a micro SD card for map storage (up to 2 gig), which is about twice the space needed for the entire road map for the US, Canada, and Mexico.
Outdoors units will also be able to load topo maps that the automotive units can't.
Outdoors units tend to not be sold with the maps, you have to add that to the price.

Size. Pro and con for both uses.
Outdoor units tend to be small so you can carry them in your hand.
Automotive units tend to be large so you can read them at a distance on the dash.
I would not want to carry an automotive unit while on trails. I can use the smaller screen for the occasional alert on the road.

Battery life.
Automotive units expect to have a car's 12 volt source available most of the time. Some have batteries but the life of the batteries is short (several hours on the ones I have seen).
Outdoors units expect to be used for long times powered by batteries. Expect 12-18 hours on a pair of good batteries.
I use rechargeable batteries in my etrex and it will run off a USB port charger in a car. When on usb power, the back light stays on instead of shutting off after a user chosen time.
